The Histamine Content of Human Gastric Juice after Pentagastrin and Insulin Stimulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The quantity of histamine entering gastric juice has been followed during standard intramuscular pentagastrin tests in 10 patients (six duodenal ulcer, one gastric ulcer and three nonulcer dyspepsia), and during standard insulin tests in three (all duodenal ulcer). Following pentagastrin, peak histamine output occurred from 0-15 min in six patients and from 15-30 min in two. Acid output peaks followed the histamine peaks by 15 min in four patients, by 30 min in two and by 45 min in one; in one patient the peaks coincided at 15-30 min. In two patients acid output peaks were not preceded by increases of histamine output. Following insulin, acid output peaks occurred at 45-60 min in one patient and at 75 to 90 min in two. In all three patients acid secretion occurred without a significant preceding increase of histamine output. Overall, the results show that, after pentagastrin, histamine is released into gastric juice and the release precedes the peak acid output. After insulin there is no such release. The results are compatible with the hypothesis that pentagastrin acts via histamine in stimulating acid secretion.

Effect of pentagastrin on histamine output from the stomach in patients with duodenal ulcer.
The role of histamine in acid secretion is controversial. Improvements in the techniques of histamine assay allow a better assessment of the relationship of histamine to acid secretion. Patients with duodenal ulcers were studied to determine the mucosal histamine responses to pentagastrin stimulation to relate the appearance of histamine in the gastric juice to acid production during stimulatio...
متن کاملEffects of histamine acid phosphate and pentagastrin on gastric secretion in normal human subjects and in patients with various gastroduodenal diseases.
Six normal subjects were tested with various doses of histamine acid phosphate (1, 10, 40, and 80 mug/kg/hr) and pentagastrin (0.15, 1.5, 6.0, and 12.0 mug/kg/hr), the different doses of the stimulants being administered by separate continuous intravenous infusions. In each sample of gastric juice, which was collected at 15-minute intervals, we estimated the concentrations of the H(+), Na(+), K...
متن کاملEffect of thyroid hormones on basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion due to histamine, carbachol, and pentagastrin in rat (an in vitro study)
Although thyroid hormones are known to influence acid secretion, but exact mechanisms are not fully understood. So, in this experimental study carbachol, histamine, and pentagastrin were used to stimulate acid secretion in isolated stomach of hypo- and hyperthyroid rats and data were compared with controls. Each group consisted of 8 N-Mari rats from both sexes weighing 246 ± 5 g. Hypo- and hype...
متن کاملInhibition by somatostatin (growth-hormone release-inhibiting hormone, GH-RIH) of gastric acid and pepsin and G-cell release of gastrin.
Somatostatin (cyclic growth-hormone release-inhibiting hormone--GH-RIH) was infused into dogs with gastric fistulae. Somatostatin inhibited gastric acid response to four gastric stimulants--insulin, food, histamine, and pentagastrin. Histamine- and pentagastrin-stimulated pepsins were inhibited similarly to inhibition of acid. Somatostatin inhibited the gastrin response to insulin and food.
متن کاملEndogenous prostaglandins in peptic ulcer disease.
Plasma concentrations of prostaglandins E and F have been measured by radioimmunoassay in patients undergoing diagnostic upper intestinal endoscopy. The results fail to support a previously reported deficiency of plasma PGE in duodenal ulcer patients. Plasma prostaglandin concentrations failed to correlate with the parameters of gastric secretion studied; and were unaffected by histamine H2-rec...
